Air Force Academy ethics instructor arrested on charges of attempting to lure a child online

WASHINGTON — An Air Force intelligence officer serving as an ethics instructor at the Air Force Academy in Colorado faces allegations that he attempted to lure a child on the internet, law enforcement officials announced Wednesday.

Capt. Paul Sikkema described his genitals, expressed his desire to perform sexual acts with an undercover officer and attempted to persuade the officer who he believed to be a 14-year-old girl to meet him, according to arrest documents filed Wednesday by investigators with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

Sikkema surrendered to investigators Wednesday and he was set to face an initial hearing Thursday.

Sikkema, 29, faces one count of internet luring of a child, a class 4 felony that carries a penalty of two to six years in prison and a fine up to $500,000, according to Colorado law. Law enforcement officials have requested he be denied bond.

The Air Force Academy confirmed the instructor’s arrest in an emailed statement.

"We are aware of the arrest and can confirm Capt. Sikkema is a professor here at the academy,” the statement said. “We are tracking his civilian court case as it goes through the legal process and will cooperate fully as needed with the Arapahoe sheriff's department.”

Arapahoe County spans about 850 square miles, east of Denver. Its county seat, Littleton, is about 55 miles north of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Arrest documents state the undercover officer first made contact with Sikkema on Jan. 21 in an online chat room. The conversation eventually continued through text messages for about one week.

Those documents also show the Air Force officer inquired about the 14-year-old’s sexual history and whether she was “into older guys.”

During at least one point in the conversation Sikkema acknowledged he should not be involved in such behavior, according to the documents.

“I can get in a lot of trouble by talking to you,” Sikkema wrote. But at another point, he wrote, “Now I really wanna come up and see you.”

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office declined further comment on the case, saying it remained under investigation.

Sikkema is a 2012 graduate of the Air Force Academy who returned in 2017 to his alma mater to teach in the philosophy department, according to his Air Force biography. He was teaching an ethics course in that department.

The captain also has a master’s degree in philosophy, which he earned from Georgia State University in 2014, writing his thesis on the ethics of targeted killing, according to the biography.

Before returning to the academy, Sikkema had attended intelligence officer training and worked as an instructor assigned to the 337th Air Control Squadron at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida.

I just don’t understand the sexual fascination with kids barely or not even in their teens. They’re like puppies on just about every level.

Neither of you know what the f**k you’re talking about, probably based on a wealth of National Guard or Reserve experience or 10 minute active duty, no doubt.

I spent 20 years in Army intel after an initial enlistment in the infantry. I spent the first half of my career working very conventional assignments and the latter half supporting and/or deployed with Army and Navy Special Ops units. As a result, I’ve worked with or for almost every one of the 17 agencies in the Intel Community and ODNI and the most conservative people I know in the military or in government are in the intel business, but so are some of the most liberal - especially in the CIA’s Directorate of Analysis, many of whom are graduates of Ivy League schools.

Obviously, you’re welcome to your opinion, but you might want to accumulate some basis of experience and expertise for that opinion before you offer dumbass generalizations.

How interesting that you should say this while having virtually zero knowledge about the people you are attacking, just unfounded assumptions and suppositions, of which you have “no doubt”.

At least in my case you are completely wrong. We may have different views (and that’s fine) but I believe as veterans we are entitled to freely express our opinions. But we are not entitled to presume false things to make a convenient predicate for our arguments against other people.

Wow. I want my son out of the Army asap. It’s leadership just not compatible with the bill of rights and our Constitution.

No, Chris, you have a seat. Let's talk about those bad checks.

“...especially in the CIA’s Directorate of Analysis, many of whom are graduates of Ivy League schools.”

Off topic somewhat, but this fascination with hiring from specific ‘pedigree’ universities is really ill advised and potentially disastrous for these agencies. It absolutely does not ensure hiring ‘the best and brightest’, and as you point out it can lead to political inbreeding and group-think.

Consider the logic of your first assertion in the context of your original post.

Being a veteran doesn’t give you any in-depth insight into intelligence, anymore than being an Army veteran gives me insight into the Marines.

It can, and does. While John Brennan (whom I knew when he was Director of the CIA’s Counter Terrorism Center) is a product of that group think. Listen to his thoughts on jihad if you have any doubt. Brennan is one vile, hateful sonofabitch - believe me. His buddy Jim Clapper is just a dullard. He has an opinion on everything, but, like Joe Biden, he’s almost always wrong.

An Air Force ‘’ethics instructor’’ is arrested as a pedophile? Wow . There’s irony for you.

Well said, especially the part about celebrating our nation’s history being somewhat melancholy. I seem to recall that the military was planning to accept avowed trannies-didn’t President Trump put a temporary halt to that? I say temporary, because as soon as a leftist is CIC again, it will go through if it hasn’t already. How will that work out, I wonder-hairy men in pantyhose and skirted uniforms. I can’t find it in me to laugh about it-the perversion is too maddening.

The case is under investigation. If they find reason for a court martial, you can be sure there will be one.
