I have to say that found my eyes constantly drawn to the former Empress who I think incredibly beautiful and elegant for a lady of her years.

Hirohito should have been executed for war crimes and the imperial family abolished.

Akihito tried to repair the damage his father did.

I don’t know if you can draw a straight line, but Korea abolished its royal family after WWII (they were basically puppets of the Japanese at that point and lived in Japan and were given Japanese titles—I think both the senior princes were Japanese military officers; one got killed at Hiroshima).

You then have Korea split up and the Korean war. Of course I don’t think there was much respect for the royal family since they were under the control of Japan. So I don’t know whether keeping the monarchy would have had a unifying effect that would have stopped the breakup.

I think the proof is in the pudding on this!
MacArthur clearly knew what he was doing here.

You should rent the movie "Japan's Longest Day" to see how close the war came to not ending even when MacArthur gave them a back channel assurance that the imperial family would remain intact. Then come back and make some asinine statement which would have accomplished nothing more than getting thousands more Japanese and Americans killed.

They've been a staunch ally of ours since the war.

Why abolish the imperial family?

Should Wilhelm, the German Crown Prince, have been restored as Kaiser after WWI? What's the difference? If anything, the Japanese, with the head of the Imperial royal family in charge as sovereign, were much more brutal than the Germans under the Kaiser.

Churchill always believed that abolishing the German and Austrian monarchies was a serious mistake, contributing to the destabilization of those states and the eventual rise in Germany of the Nazis. And one doesn’t need to be a history major to know the horror that followed the fall of the Romanovs.

Certainly if the Japanese imperial family could be excused for their war crimes, then the Kaiser and the Habsburgs could also be excused. However, there is something to be said for justice. Also, keeping the Kaiser in power would have risked a continuance of the war after Germany recovered. Austria-Hungary was a lost cause in any case at the end of the war.

Because the members of the imperial families, like Prince Konoe were involved in Japanese military aggression to expand the empire as well. And nothing happened without the Emperor’s acquiescence. People later claimed he had little power, but the Emperor was king and pope combined.

That was absolutely fascinating to watch. Such quiet dignity is lacking in this world. Thanks much for posting it. Wish I had a translation of what was being said, and what was in the boxes and stuff.

I don’t have a translation of the speeches but the boxes contained two of the three so called “Sacred Treasures,” an ancient sword symbolizing valor, a jewel representing benevolence and a mirror representing wisdom. There is a lot of myth surrounding these and they are never shown to the public. Each are kept at different temples. The two smaller purple containers hold the Privy Seal and the State Seal. Over the preceding weeks there have been various private and semi-public rituals where he has visited the graves of his ancestors and different temples to report his planned abdication to the Gods as well as his fore-bearers.

You have announced to FR that anything you say is irrelevant and based not on historical outcome but foolish revisionist crap.

WW2 was horrible. The emperor executed the surened against the military hard line saving millions (maybe 10s of millions) of lives. But your infinite wisdom would throw that away based on a peaceful ceremony that was completely benign to all of us.

Dumb ass. Definition of dumb ass. Even MacArthur saw this as a positive. And he was a super hard ass.

If you served in WW2 then I honor you your opinion with absolute respect. Otherwise your an ID10T of awesome size.
