Jakarta faces massive challenges. As the BBC has reported, it’s the fastest-sinking city in the world, with almost half of its area below sea level.

At least the Indonesians recognize this and are not sticking their heads in the sand but are taking APPROPRIATE and responsible action.

I can’t say the same about our approach to New Orleans which is also sinking with large portions of the city already below sea level. Folks need to realize why New Orleans was called the “Crescent City” and not the “Large Bowl Below Sea Level” city. Eventually, the parts of New Orleans that are below sea level will actually be below water. We’ve been spending BILLIONS to delay that inevitability.

New Orleans must also deal with the river shifting course and making a new outlet based on the Atchafalaya to the west of rhe city. The existing Mississippi channel will become mostly a sluggish bayou that deprives New Orleans of most of its economic value as a port.
