This took place in Canada which, IIRC, banned the Bible (or parts thereof) and certain songs as being homophobic.
I will also never forget that Canada offered sanctuary to the draft-dodging, American cowards of the 1960s.

Worse than that. The guest teacher who came in to our Grade 12 history class to teach about the Vietnam War was a draft dodger. There is no worse anti-Americans, even worse than the average Canadian, than a draft dodger.
