I have lived in MA my entire life and do not know ONE person that dislikes Southerners————-not one.

I’ve lived in MA three years and have run across quite a few that spoke ill of Southerners, usually by stereotyping. Not much I can say except our experiences differ.

He could also pass for a 19 year old omniscient male who has had a few too many drinks.

The animosity between those two regions and the completely different world views go all the way back to Jolly Ole England. They were different communities who hated each other there. New Englanders were Puritans who backed Cromwell in the English Civil War and they were just as fanatical and just as much busybodies back then. Witness the Salem Witch trials. Witness Roger Williams having to leave and found Rhode Island to get out from under their intolerant oppressive rule.

Jamestown was much more live and let live. They backed King James. UVA’s mascot is what? Oh that’s right.....the Cavaliers. That’s no coincidence. (Cavaliers vs Roundheads in the English Civil War). My direct namebearing ancestor arrived in Jamestown in 1649. The Roundheads won the war, there were no civil rights, time for Cavaliers to get the hell out before something really bad happened to them.

Just about all the intellectual might behind the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights came from Virginia - Jefferson, Madison, Henry, Mason, Etc. It’s quite libertarian in outlook. New England set about working to subvert it not long after. We have Jamestown/Virginia/the South to thank for us not being as centralized as European countries - and for us having much stronger protections for free speech, the right to bear arms etc.

New England is trying to destroy this too. They’d love gun confiscation and some European style “hate speech” laws. The worst thing the South ever did was think it could coexist in one nation with New England. We should never have partnered with them in anything.

personally, I prefer Generals that didn’t get captured and surrender

When someone has 4 to 5 times your manpower advantage, you will be crushed eventually. It is a testament to his abilities that he staved it off for so long.

“This “cleansing”: removing statues, flags, art is an abomination.”

The Nikki Haley wing of the GOP has been helping them.

And it’s not just Civil War history that’s under attack, the always opportunistic Dinesh D’Souza has been waging a PC jihad against Andrew Jackson.

“There’s a Confederate Memorial in Arlington.”

The last private owners of Arlington were Colonel and Mrs Robert E Lee.

Lee’s wife was the daughter of GW Parke Custis and they inherited the property upon his death in 1857. The only time that they had a house of their own.

Parke Custis was Martha Washington’s grandson. Martha and George Washington had raised Parke and his sister at Mount Vernon after the death of their father.

Antietam Battlefield is administered by the US National Park Service.

How is a Republican Quisling like Governor Hogan going to remove a statue of General Lee from Antietam? Maybe the statue is outside the park.

Larry Hogan and Nikki Haley are cut from the same mold.

"but he never committed treason, so there’s that"

George Washington and all of the colonial Patriots committed treason according to the government that they were rebelling against, so there's that:

The estate was stolen by the federal government from the Lee family under the fabricated claim they had failed to pay taxes on it (large amounts of Southern property were stolen from their owners by the Union on the same fabrication).

Apt analogy. The culture has changed. Nowadays if you aren't foaming at the mouth about racism, you aren't radical enough to be considered acceptable by the left. This business of destroying historical monuments is just virtue signaling for people who want to prove how much they care about race issues.

In other words, virtue signaling.

Democrats are still trying to erase the history of their past acts so they can pretend it was all done by Republicans.

“but he never committed treason, so there’s that”

“George Washington and all of the colonial Patriots committed treason according to the government that they were rebelling against, so there’s that:”

So, it appears that you’re conceding that Robert E Lee committed treason (we both wholeheartedly agree with that!), but that his actions were no different than that of George Washington and all of the colonial Patriots.

There are a couple of problems with that logic, though. If you follow that train of thought, you’re implying that Robert E Lee was no different than Fidel Castro or Vladimir Lenin. After all, they committed treason according to the government they were rebelling against, weren’t they? I suspect you aren’t as comfortable comparing Robert E Lee (and George Washington!) to Fidel Castro and Vladimir Lenin, but that’s exactly what you are doing.

There’s another issue with your comparison. Robert E Lee, as a military officer, swore an explicit oath to defend the country. The oath he swore is a little different than the modern one, but it did include the lines “…I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”. So, he forswore his sacred oath when he committed treason (I thought his word and his honor would have meant something to Robert E Lee, but I guess not). Washington was not an officer of the crown (he was a member of the Virginia militia in the French and Indian War), so he had no explicit oath to go against.

Another issue is, why did they commit treason? In George Washington’s case it was to rid the country of an oppressive, non-representative government, and to freely elect their government. In Robert E Lees’ case is was to maintain the right to own people. I think you would agree they are not the same.
So, to summarize, Robert E Lee was a forsworn traitor, and can in no way be compared to an honorable man like George Washington

Pelly has always been comfortable tossing George Washington under the bus in some weird, hokey attempt at equivalence.

“There are a couple of problems with that logic, though”

It’s the logic of Charles Francis Adams Jr., who appears to have understood the issue a good deal better than you.
