I went through USMC OCS at Quantico in 1982. We had several heat casualties. Two died from heat stroke.
At the time, we just accepted it and moved on.
Chuck Hughes died after catching a pass and being absolutely leveled by Dick Butkus in the most vicious hit I have ever seen. He died on the next play I think.
My grand daughter went through Navy boot camp recently and she said it wasn’t that bad but she was fit when she went. She said most of them were in terrible shape and even the ones that are slender and look healthy are really out of shape to do anything.
Of course I have no idea what happened to those in the article but many young people today are not as active as we all were when we grew up.
The only time I had electrodes on me was on the treadmill. Who knows.
The picture was of Butkus desperately trying to signal help for Hughes, because he saw that he had turned blue.
While Butkus’ hit may have been the thing the triggered Hughes’ death, the autopsy revealed essentially that he had the heart of an 80-year old. Apparently he had experienced some chest pains a few weeks beforehand, but the team doctors dismissed it. I believe she wound up suing the Lions’ organization.
Maybe girls shouldn’t be allowed in the general enlistment...
“... Resume the draft and raise the standards...”
______________________________
When the draft IS resumed don’t be surprised if women are included. A judge ruled the ‘male only’ Draft Registration to be Unconstitutional.
The chickens are coming home to roost, whether the young women in this country are aware of it...sooner or later, it *will* happen.....
Heh, heh. I remember guys like you guarding our stuff; we always had a lot of fun with them. I’d tell you some of it, but that would be compromising ...
If the base had crypto gear and was purported to be a submarine base, it was likely a sub transmission of receiving station - no subs on that base, just comm gear.
The Russians were always sneaking up on those sorts of bases, except in one base we were on fair terms with them supplying them with ice cream and coke when their Hind helicopters stopped over us on the exchange inspection sorties. That and the 3 Russian Armies and 30,000 tanks just a few km away ...
Resuming the draft and raising the standards from what they are presently would result in fewer recruits, not more. That says nothing about the educational needs of the modern military which is very technical.
The resumed draft would kill the US military as presently configured.
Could be, but we really don’t know enough at this point IMO.
Most youthful heart attacks are due to an undetected flaw that has the symptom of being fatal at first appearance.
This Active Duty service member agrees wholeheartedly. Today's military has no interest in conscripts, no need for them, and no system in place to train them. WE do not want to serve alongside disgruntled malcontents that don't want to be here.
It is sad, but thousands and thousand of people go through boot camp without dying. This is getting blown way out of proportion. The girl is from my hometown. This is what she may have died of:
Unfortunately, because many people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy don’t realize they have it, there are instances where the first sign of a problem is sudden cardiac death. These cases can happen in seemingly healthy young people, including high school athletes and other young, active adults. News of these types of deaths generates understandable attention because they’re so unexpected, but parents should be aware these deaths are quite rare.
Are medical exams required , is medical history needed to be more complete?
Of course we want to prevent death. Could most deaths have been prevented with stress test etc?

Yes, medical exams are required. Assuming cardiomyopathy was her cause of death, a medical history would be irrelevant because frequently there are no symptoms. Deaths like these are extremely rare (that’s why they’re major news) and I doubt there is much you could do about them. Sometimes people die, even young, seemingly healthy people.
Nobody counsels these recruits to show up in shape. Could well be the first heavy physical exertion in a lifetime, what with TV, video games, faces buried in phones...
I passed out for the first time in my life while running on the Grinder there in late August- early September of 1961.

You beat me there by a few months. I was there in early December, 1961. It was very cold.
We had a fatal case of Spinal Meningitis in the barracks below. Fortunately no cases in our barracks.
Our DI got relieved for brutality to recruits. He broke the foot of a boot camper with the stock of a M1.
Then, I ended up marching the guys to from and fro. I had been on an ROTC drill team. I was 22 and the other guys were from 18 to my age.
