Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein spoke out Sunday on the deadly attack on his synagogue in the San Diego metropolitan area which left one woman dead and three people wounded over the weekend.
Speaking with NBC News, the 57-year-old rabbi and spiritual leader of the Chabad of Poway synagogue recalled the moment he stood face to face with the gunman, John T. Earnest, before being shot and losing two of his fingers.
“As soon as I walked in through the banquet hall, I heard a large bang, a large noise, and I didn’t know what it was. I thought that maybe Mrs. Lori fell or the table fell. I turned around and I was face to face with this murderer, this terrorist, who was holding the rifle and looking straight at me. As soon as he saw me he started to shoot towards me. That’s when I put my hands up, and that’s when my fingers got blown away. Then he continued on and just killed Lori Kaye right there on the spot.”
“I turned around and saw a group of children in the banquet hall, including my granddaughter. And I just ran, herded all the kids together and got them outside.....Fortunately, there’s an off-duty patrol officer during services who came in pursuit of the terrorist.”
Rabbi Goldstein went on to describe Lori Kaye as a “pioneering family member” of the Chabad congregation and “an activist” who had helped build the synagogue for decades.
“She was just a kind soul. Everyone in the community knew her. She was the kind of person who was the first to be everywhere.”
“She’s such a dear friend. I’ve known her for 33 years. I’m so heartbroken and saddened by these killings.”

No, not terrorism
A terrible crime by an insane individual
No evidence he intended to terrorize, just to murder
His stated intention in his manifesto is to kill some jews, and in so doing inspire other European men to also kill jews in the defense of the white race. He says he’s not a terrorist because (paraphrasing) only arabs are terrorists. I feel like this probably makes him a terrorist but I honestly can’t tell what the word means anymore. Maybe he’s right?

Prayers up for this brave woman and her husband (a physician who unknowingly tried to save her life, and fainted when he realized it was his wife. So sad), their family and Chabad community.
I recall seeing a video of a presser with JFK explaining what he was doing to counter the Klan in the South, and he repeatedly referred to them as ‘terrorists’. The British during the Mandate referred to the Irgun as ‘terrorists,’ a characterization which Begin objected to for the reasons stated in Revolt!. The IRA were terrorists without doubt. It’s merely Earnest’s racism speaking when he says that only Arabs can be terrorists. He was without doubt a terrorist by every definition of the word, as was that New Zealand idiot, and as was Baruch Goldstein.
Imho, a terrorist: 1. Targets civilians; 2. Does so in order to terrorize political leaders into doing his will, or to create chaos, or instigate civil wars, or some other political aim; and 3. Breaches the implicit trust of the people around him, by disguising his intentions, such as a female suicide bomber disguising the bomb as a pregnant woman’s stomach, or a suicide bomber disguising himself as a Chassidic Rabbi; or a Purim pageant player dressed as an Arab sheikh and waving what’s believed to be a fake sword around as he dances, getting close to 13-year-old girl and suddenly decapitating her. All these have happened in Israel.
Erny had all elements except maybe the last, depending on how he got the gun into the synagogue. I’m sure he didn’t just walk in casually with it, but even if he came in running, he could be said to have breached the congregation’s trust that they were about to enjoy a festive meal and some prayers.
