Cuban migrants stage mass escape from center in south Mexico

At least 1,300 mainly Cuban migrants fled on foot from an immigration detention center on Mexico’s southern border Thursday in the largest mass escape in recent memory.

The National Immigration Institute said 700 of the Cubans had returned voluntarily, but 600 were still on the loose.

The institute said agents inside the compound weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later streamed into the compound to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside.

None of this makes sense. Earlier, F&F said they were on their way to the US. Why are "Cubans" going through the south of Mexico to get to the US? 1300 don't "escape" without the front door being left open, the guards are all having a siesta and a taco truck is waiting outside.

Why would Cubans come in through Mexico and not Florida? Cubans are welcome in my book.

No, they can’t be.

If they’d just put on some swim goggles, they’d have already been in the US. Cubans do not go to southern Mexico to get to the US. South America and other countries we don’t want here do.

Don't assume that. The Marxist Cuban dictators like to infiltrate military forces into the US. (I've actually witnessed this in the Florida Keys). I hate to report this, because as you write, many DO deserve asylum.

You are correct! I've seen it in the Florida Keys.

The only way “Cubans” would be doing land-crossings like Mexicans et. al is if they’re NON-Cubans aware of the special, “dry foot on land” rule for Cubans, and are simply LYING about it.

Obama ended wet foot/dry foot. Not that it means these are Cubans, just may explain why they would attempt to enter through Mexico.

Cubans began to come up through this border after the “wet foot dry foot” policy was changed, not sure why when it is still closer for them to go to Florida.

When we started getting Cubans here through the Mexican border we were amazed and still haven’t figured it out.

Yes Cubans absolutely do come across this border not at all uncommon, it started when the O changed the “wet foot, dry foot” policy. It makes no sense but yes Cubans do cross this border.

In fact everyone crosses this border; Chinese, Cubans, you name it they all come across. I sit here and wonder why, no answers. Makes no sense to Border Patrol either.

The O did away with the “wet foot, dry foot” policy. It still doesn’t make sense for them to come this way, but indeed they are and have for the last few years.

Everyone comes across this border. We need a wall and we need to be able to enforce our laws.

IF they are truly Cubans (not criminals or agents masquerading as citizens), they are allowed to leave Cuba for “vacations” in Venezuela. I remember a guy I dated had escaped Cuba in 1964 using that same scenario. He, his mom, and dad arrived at a South American port, got off their ship and promptly got onto a ship headed to NYC. They left with only a few clothes and their suitcase. Once they hit U.S. shores they claimed and received asylum. So, I suppose some Cubans managed to get to Venezuela, cross over a border, and head to Mexico. My only hesitation in this is the sheer numbers. A family? Meh, it’s plausible. Over a thousand escaping Cuba at the same time? Doubtful. Unless, it’s like the Mariel boatlift in the 80’s, I suppose the Castros could be shipping out their criminals and emptying the insane asylums again if they’re shipping out thousands at a time.
