The only bad thing McCarthy did in my view was withholding support for Henry Cabot Lodge when he ran for re-election to the Senate in 1952. Had he enthusiastically supported Lodge, he might have defeated his opponent, John F. Kennedy—and instead of emerging into prominence over the next six decades, the Kennedys would have faded away into obscurity, to the benefit of this country.
