I expect he got the medical news from the family, who likely authorized him to provide the update to the congregation. That would not be a violation of “patient privacy”.

The pastor can’t violate patient privacy he is not a healthcare worker. Presumably his parents gave permission to him to share information with the congregation but either way the pastor is not subject to HIPAA

HIPAA doesn’t pertain to clergy and churches. (Imagine a prayer meeting where you couldn’t gossip about others’ ailments. LOL!) Still, it’s decent that he got the OK from the folks first.
