It’s possible it was Muslims. They’re 10% of the population. There has been so much violence between Hindus and Buddhists (or Tamil and Sinhalese) that it’s hard to say who is behind it. Some of the Tamil are Muslim, as are the small number of Malays. Christians can be Tamil, Sinhalese or mixed race Burghers. It’s complicated.

The suicide belt was invented back in the ‘70s by a Sri Lanka separatist group, the Tamil Tigers.
The Tamils are a minority in Sri Lanka and they are mostly Hindu. They hate the majority Buddhist Sinhalese, but it’s about political separatism rather than religion.
The island is 70% Buddhist, 13% Hindu, 10% Muslim, 7% Catholic/Christian

Went to Sri Lanka in 1994 the day after a LTTE suicide bomber took out one of the Presidential candidates in Columbo. Interesting time to go into the capitol while it was basically under martial law. Every bridge, every major road intersection had a squad or so of Sri Lankan soldiers. Interesting trip.
