He timed them while they boiled the WWII syringe to make sure it was sterile. Not fun. As a hospital administrator at a famous hospital I once had the misfortune of being part of a group that toured Muhimbili Medical Center,the largest and most important hospital in Tanzania.
To describe what we saw as medieval would just be scratching the surface.

I've read that after he died the chief witness for the prosecution at his trial admitted that he lied in his testimony.If he was,in fact,innocent (which seems likely) it's easy to see why he wasn't looking forward to the 30 year stretch that his conviction carried.
Also,I read that under PA and/or Federal law,if he died before sentencing his widow got to keep his survivor pension while she wouldn't be able to once he was formally sentenced.
