I am asked the same question, as you say it’s by law. I do not see how it could be to anyone’s advantage to say “yes”, if one actually feels threatened. There have been two occasions where someone has threatened my life. In both cases I reported this to what I feel are the proper authorities.
My point is, just what good can become of telling a health professional?

I have never been asked that question. I doubt that it is "required by law" - at least not in this State.
When I see a doctor, I do get consistently asked "do you feel depressed?" in a tone of voice that makes it obvious that they are reading from a required checklist. Some vague positive reassurances are the correct answer to that question.
