Former Massachusetts Gov. William Bill Weld announced Monday he is running against President Trump for the Republican nomination for president.
Weld revealed that he formed a presidential exploratory committee back in February, but Mondays announcement makes his intra-party challenge official.
In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their win at all cost battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering, Weld said in a statement provided to the Washington Examiner. It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln equality, dignity, and opportunity for all."
He added: "There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great."
Weld, 73, is the first major Republican challenger to Trumps presidency. He was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as a U.S. attorney and served in that role from 1981 to 1986. Weld served for the following two years as the U.S. assistant attorney general for the criminal division under Reagan.

Who?
Trump will probably lose and then Weld will lose in 2020.
LOL zero chance Trump loses the R race.
ZZZzzz
Bill Weld, who dares to be a moderate, well, sort of, kind of, as long as it doesn't offend anyone . . .
“the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering,
If libtards are suffering, then this country is damn awesome..
Delusional idiot.
How much money did he get from the Democrats?
This is just to distract Trump so he can’t focus on the Democrats from the beginning.
Former governor of Taxachussetts. Thats all we need to know.
What a maroon.....
He’s still pissed that conservatives killed his Mexico ambassadorsip nomination.
“Trump will probably lose...”
I really don’t believe it’s possible to post a comment any more wrong than that one.
You're kidding, right?
the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering

Yes, both parties were hell bent on turning the USA into North Mexico.
That’s why we elected Trump.
As Jimmy Carter said: “I’ll whip his ass”.
What are you smoking?
Weld has no chance of getting the GOP nomination.
It’s a good way to make money. He was the Libertarian VP candidate last election.
1) During the primaries the media will make like Weld is as good as the 2nd coming of Christ. They always do that with Republicans they think will lose the general election.
2) Trump will win the nomination anyway. It's very rare an primary challenger makes any headway against an incumbent President.
3) Trump will win the general election, too.
In my lifetime when a party takes over the White House they keep it for at least two terms in a row. The only exception to this was Carter failing to win re-election in 1980. Bush Sr. was also a one-term president, but he was already the third term in a row for Republicans (he followed two terms of Reagan). So unless you think Trump will have the stunningly low popularity of Jimmy Malaise Carter, then 2020 is to Trump's advantage.
A couple of decades ago he was a good guv for MA, with the leftist Dems recognizing they needed some sort of Republican to save them from themselves.
But he was a raging alcoholic and went off the rails before the end of his second term.
Now he is a pitiful disaster. Trump once again fortunate in his opponents.
A Massachusetts GOPe RINO Never Trumper volunteering for the slaughter.
