The 8th Air Force and Bomber Command of the RAF destroyed many of the German cathedrals and a number of French cathedrals as well. They have been rebuilt. Notre Dame was not touched by WWII, and now it appears that a renovation project will destroy it.
Cologne Cathedral was nearly untouched even though the city was flattened. I’m sure the 8th Air Force did their utmost to avoid harming churches. Bombing by day, that was at least possible.
The R.A.F. bombing at night was a different story. But such is war.
