maybe daniel1212 would be so kind as to suggest to everyone that now, or at least this thread, is not the place to discuss relics.

I did not start it, but responded to the implicit promotion of Rome that was introduced in response to the rejection of the authenticity of a relic. But fine if relics are not to be discussed, yet there are the gargoyles of Notre-Dame that watch over the building

They are there as both rain spouts to channel the water from the roof and as symbolism used by the Catholic Church to depict evil and keep evil spirits away with equally evil creations. While there have been some attempts to attach theological significance to gargoyles, the name seems to derive from their drain-spout function. The artists probably thought it was a lot more fitting to have streams of water coming at you from something that looked nasty than to have it coming forth from a saint.

And we should be thankful that the drainage system has at least been partially salvaged.

As sad as it is to see such a beautiful and historic building be destroyed we should NEVER forget that everything man has built in this world will one day be completely burned up and because of that fact, what manner of people should we be?
