WASHINGTON — State Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr. is expected to run for the U.S. House next year, giving national Republicans a major recruiting success following a midterm where Democrats captured four of the five GOP-held House seats.

Kean, R-Union, already has set up a fundraising committee and met with officials of the House Republicans’ political arm advance of his announcement scheduled for Tuesday in Clark. A campaign consultant, Harrison Neely, declined to comment.

I kinda remember Kean pere as something of a liberal Republican, but whatevs. If Junior can claw back a House seat, more power to him. We’ll take what we can get at this point, esp. in a state like NJ.

In NJ, there’s only one kind of Republican who wins statewide office - the liberal kind. It has to be said, however, that they are more conservative than the state’s Democrats.

Chris Christie was hardly a liberal; he had all the liberal forces of evil arrayed against him. The problem is that with each passing day, more and more productive people are leaving NJ; it gets harder for conservatives to win here.

His old man , Tom, although a moderate Republican, was a good governor in the eighties when it came to cutting taxes and trying to get a handle on spending. That is the best you can expect from Jersey Republicans who labor with an increasingly blue electorate as taxes drive red voters out of state.

If Kean runs, I might send him some money...a Republican who supports Trump 90% is better than a Dem who oppose Trump 100%.
