Outgoing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Thursday defended Attorney General William Barr against allegations that he is misleading Congress and the public about the special counsel’s Russia report.

“He’s being as forthcoming as he can, and so this notion that he’s trying to mislead people, I think is just completely bizarre,” Rosenstein said in a rare interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Democrats have accused Barr of releasing misleading information about special counsel Robert Mueller’s findings from his 22-month investigation, which focused on possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as whether President Trump tried to obstruct the probe.

“Or he’s trying to rack up brownie points as quickly as possible.”

He is contending for one of the “get out of jail free” cards.

Re your brownie points comment:

I’m guessing here, because we don’t have the whole Rosenstein story, but I think the key to his behavior is that he is a careerist. He adjusts his activities in accordance with the prevailing wind.

Going along with that conjecture, I’d bet that Rod would be singing a different tune if he thought Trump was going to be out in 2020. Then, resistance and legal foot-dragging could lead him to play the Dem hero role. He’s decided that’s not the way the wind is blowing.

Obviously, still a guess.

Rosie knows what’s coming.

Exactly. Don’t forget that Rosenstein signed off on the last FISA warrant application. By that time he should have known the “factual” basis for the probable cause was based upon an unverified series of documents which the “Resistance” has chosen to call a “dossier.” In fact, it should be called what it is - an opposition research hit piece paid for by the DNC and the Clinton campaign. It is difficult to believe Rosenstein did not know this when he signed the FISA warrant application. Likewise, it is difficult to believe Rosenstein did not know the origins of the “dossier” were concealed from the FISA court. If so, his most recent support for Barr’s conclusions may be a belated effort to protect himself from what may be coming. To me, it is too little too late.
