Prolonging the Netanyahu era would undermine Israeli democracy and bury any last hope of a two-state peace Which is why Bibi won.....no two-state peace is possible. The Arabs in Gaza will continue to attack Israel until one side or the other is pushed into the sea. There is no middle ground.

Oh, wait. It HAS happened. Consider the victory of Donald Trump in 2016. Or an even more current occurrence, consider the turnaround in the news just in the past twenty-four hours, with Attorney General William Barr declaring that the Trump transition team was spied upon by the Obama administration.
If what happened to the Democrats were related to what happens to a sailboat when the wind dies, they were suddenly dead in the water.
