Would you want your kid to enlist so he or she can fight in Afghanistan or Syria? Why?

The Coast Guard actually protects American borders - not the frontiers of far-off lands. If my kids want to serve in the armed forces, I’d suggest the Coast Guard - so they’re protecting America, not dying in a neocon nation-building project on the other side of the globe

My Dad was a WW II Colonel. He said he’d do anything he could to keep me from going to Vietnam. I went because I had enlisted. He knew “the straight dope” as he put it.

The Coast Guard actually deploys all around the world, not just US waters. They have a bases in I think Bahrain and Phillipines. They operate as part of the Iraqi and Afghanistani missions.
