Joseph Anthony Buttigieg II (May 20, 1947 January 27, 2019) was a Maltese-American literary scholar, professor and translator. He served as William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame until 2017, when he became professor emeritus. Buttigieg translated and edited the English edition of Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks. He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1979. Buttigieg was born and raised in South Bend, the only child of University of Notre Dame English professors Joseph A. Buttigieg, who emigrated from the island nation of Malta, and Jennifer Anne Montgomery, a Southern Indiana native.
