This weekend, more than 14,000 academics will gather in Toronto to share their research for the American Education Research Associations annual conference. In past years, Ive documented the focus of AERA academics on matters that seem only obliquely connected to curriculum, instruction, and policy. It looks like more of the same this year, from the symposium on Liberating Oppressed Ontologies and Cosmologies for Transformational Praxis to the paper Queer Evolution: (Re)invigorating Environmental Education through Queer Interpretations of Evolutionary Onto-Epistemological Choreography. But this years conference has especially lofty ambitions. Under the title Leveraging Education Research in a Post-Truth Era: Multimodal Narratives to Democratize Evidence, the events promotional poster features a lighthouse inscribed with the words Trust, Integrity, Methodology, and Reliability, which looks out over a sea of Post-Truth, Propaganda, and Fabrication.
Unfortunately, rather than a renewed commitment to methodologically sound research into education policy and practice, the conference program demonstrates a preoccupation with promoting a virulent new brand of racism. A keyword search of the conference program reveals 422 hits for whitenessmore than for personalized learning (16), school boards (19), standardized testing (20), high school graduation (23) reading achievement (24), digital learning (25), policy analysis (31), early education (38), teacher evaluation (41) literacy instruction (42), bilingual education (48), and achievement gap (75) combined.
A symposium called The Interrogation of Whiteness in Progressive Public Schools promises to explore the experience of teachers and education leaders who work to undo whiteness in public schools. A featured paper in that session is Trust, Community, and Dismantling White Dominance. Another, Critical-Race Elementary Schooling: Teacher Change Agents are Undoing Whiteness in Elementary Schools, celebrates teachers who actively resist elements of Whiteness.

It only takes a few years for the crap at these “education” conferences to trickle down to the classroom.
My sister teaches in a black inner city school and says the racial hatred for whites is just zooming off scale this year.
And then .. educators try to understand why there is growth in home schooling and why some parents will pay lots of money to get their children into parochial schools.
Middle class black families also are represented in my parish’s parochial school. The children seem to get along together very well, and the subject of race is not hammered into their heads every other hour, just real academics.

I took a couple of Masters level Pedagogy classes in college. ‘Pedagogy’ is a fancy word for ‘how to teach’. So I’m not surprised this subject matter has made it into that realm.
...and, unfortunately, coming soon to a public school district near you.
School districts across the country send administrators and teachers to these conferences. There is NO industry more fad-driven than public education. They adopt this crap very quickly, often a bit watered down and thinly disguised, but the same underlying insanity is there.
I don't agree with that.
Hard work, strict discipline, willingness to kick out trouble makers, fail poorly performing students, eliminate the bigotry of low expectations, set high standards, expunge all this radical leftist "hate whitey" and other liberal PC bullish!t from the curriculum, stop social promotion, resist mommas showing up and complaining how little La'squisha is treated unfairly, administrations siding with the teachers and having their backs, reduce zero-value administrators by 90%, move control out of Washington to local school districts, stop taking Washington DC money, and a couple dozen other things CAN close the "achievement gap."
Unfortunately, none of that is possible in today's US of A.
They blame their failures on straight white non-muzzy males.
