Many years ago (as a teenager—my summer “job”) I used to drive my grandfather a hundred miles to Manhattan to one of the hospitals for some medical stuff he needed done.

On the way home on one of the trips we were on the cross Bronx expressway. A car in front of me slammed on their brakes. I had less than a second to do something to avoid hitting them—no time to look, just a quick decision to do something, anything.

I swerved into the left lane—and fortunately no-one was there.

I still have nightmares about it.

That was the last time I ever drove into Manhattan.

I had a non-accident like that here in Knoxville. I was driving west on our main drag, Kingston Pike in fairly heavy traffic and not paying attention as I should. Somebody in front of me suddenly stopped and I saw it just in time to put my brakes on and instinctively swerve into the left lane. Fortunately, nobody was there and I avoided a bad collision that would have been my fault. Now, with my 2018 Navigator, there’s a collision prevention feature that substantially reduces the chance of that kind of collision.
