Compared to the dumpster fire that is the Diem Field for 2020, he's not so bad... He joined the Navy Reserves in 2010, got elected as Mayor in 2012, got called up to go to Afghanistan in 2013, and he actually went in 2014 (for 7 months in a plum position, but still... compared to the Dems...). His revitalization projects in South Bend have not been entire failures. The "smart streets" program isn't as horrid as most liberal programs. The popular downtown laser light show was privately financed. He has no scandals while in office. He focused on revitalizing the city parks, which needed a bit of attention. e was only a mayor, after all.
He shouldn't win in 2020, or even the Primary... but again, he is the best of a really bad barrel of apples. A low bar, to be sure, but he cleared it. (He's far too young and inexperienced for the most powerful seat on earth just yet.)
His main competition for the Almost Bearable Dem Nominee Award: Tulsi Gabbard, the Samoan Hindu representing Hawaii, also served in the military, and occasionally says pro-US things, which is refreshing. She served in the Hawaii House of Representatives from 2002 to 2004... then served in a field medical unit of the Hawaii Army National Guard in a combat zone in Iraq from 2004 to 2005... and was deployed to Kuwait from 2008 to 2009. She also opposed same-sex marriage for a while, but got whipped back into line soon enough. She wrote against "religiously bigotry" of opposing folks for being Christian. She also didn't join the Dem Party in their initial Hate Trump parade (second to meet with him, didn't oppose Bannon, etc). She seems to be going further Left lately to try to keep pace with her Party, but she has had some moments of sanity.
