It’s not bribery, any more than paying more for first class air tickets is bribery. Colleges practice price discrimination against dumb students who might negatively impact their reputation for quality. Dumber than a stump? They’ll admit you if your parents pony up something of lasting value to the college - such as a school building or a scholarship. Having said that, I think we should stop treating colleges with large endowments as non-profits. If your endowment exceeds $1b, it’s time to look at treating you as a for-profit corporation.

Apparently so - rich people have been doing it for decades. For example, see
this article in the Harvard Crimson about Harvard's "Dean's Interest List".
