Prosecutors present evidence to convict. The defense argues against, and presents evidence that mitigates, and or refutes that presented by the prosecution. It is then the role of a jury (if a jury trial) or a judge otherwise to find guilty, not guilty (exonerate) or some other outcome e.g mistrial.

Not guilty is different than innocence ( exoneration).
Not guilty means a juror might think the guy is guilty but the case for that was not proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
