It escapes me why people insist on calling the case “complicated” and “ever-evolving” when it’s actually extremely simple - Smollett lied. The only complications that occur happen when people try to make this part of the grand and largely fallacious narrative of Racist America. If this sort of thing threatens their entire worldview - and it does - then maybe that worldview could use some serious reconsideration.
