At one point, twenty years or so ago anyway, Sesame Street was making over a BILLION dollars a year on merchandise sales alone.

The usual idiots claimed that the taxpayers still had to fund PBS because public television wasn't allowed to touch those profits, according to the law.

Well then, CHANGE THE FRICKIN' LAW!!

I'm actually a fan of PBS, to a great extent. But it can certainly pay for itself and still be a breed apart from commercial television. It can also keep the annual "Festival" pledge drives going (which I also wouldn't mind if nothing else than for the hot babes they always seem to employ at the local affiliates when they come on camera begging for money...)

It has been probably five years or so since I have seen my local PBS affiliate's fundraisers, but "hot babes" were definitely NOT part of pledge week. I suppose cheesecake could make some of us actually pay attention to the... uh... tote bags. If anything, the females tended to look like frumpy, middle-aged teachers attending an NEA convention.

(Not that there is anything wrong with that...)

Other than old Britcom reruns and Red Green, there was little incentive for me to watch PBS after they stopped running things like "World At War."
