My dad put himself though USC after his naval action in WWII

So did my dad, a navy pharmacists mate ("corpse-man" in Øbowel speak) attached to the Marines for the Pacific campaign.

I gather the GI bill back then was a lot more generous than in the late 60's. No way would it pay for USC then.

It’s back to being generous. I have a buddy who just did commercial pilot flight school on his post 9/11 GI bill. Paid for almost all of his six figure flight training bill.

The GI bill in the sixties would not pay all the cost of getting a degree. A certain amount might be reimbursed per course, but even a community college required additional money.
