Education consultants not surprised by high-profile college cheating scandal
NBC News ^ | March 13, 2019 | Mary Pflum

The indictments of actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman on charges of offering bribes to enhance their children’s chances of getting into top colleges may come as a surprise to “Full House” and “Desperate Housewives” fans. But the news of a complicated cheating scandal involving privileged parents is not surprising to education consultants who spoke to NBC News.

“Parents are willing to do pretty much anything to get their kids into good schools,” said Robert Schwartz, founder of Your Best College Essay, a business aimed at coaching students to write the perfect college admissions essay. “They are hiring consultants to work on every aspect of a child’s college application. Today, it’s not uncommon for parents to outsource everything — to hire coaches for their kids’ college interviews, personal trainers to make them better athletes, tutors to improve their test scores.”

I am 50. I come from an upper middle class family. I don't even remember if "admissions consultants" were even around back when I was going through the college admissions process. The only thing I did was buy one of SAT prep books. Some friends did go to SAT prep classes but that was the extent of trying to gain an advantage. Things have gone bat*** crazy now.

Why do people care about this?

This whole story is part of the far-left narrative that says it’s “unfair” for rich people to use their wealth.

This attitude is why job-creating people create jobs in other countries. In most places outside the US, this kind of thing is accepted and encouraged.

Wealthy families should get the benefit of their wealth. Otherwise, what’s the point of being rich and creating jobs?

Same, here.

You attend a series of study sessions to help you understand the test, the you take it.

You can always retake it, if desired. I did, and did fairly better the second time.

Why? Cause you don’t use your wealth to commit crimes that’s why.

Change name of show to Desperate Mothers. I hope this Caplan creep loses his law license.

There are now reported over 800 cases of bribery. It is nation wide. It is exploding like a bomb. There are other “ consultants “ doing these bribes. The colleges had to know. How far up did the money flow? Pop corn please. Time for lie detectors. All these phony students need to be yanked so that we can get back to racial discrimination in granting admission and the occasional kid with merit.

The SAT/ACT used to be almost a pure IQ test. Accordingly, there was no way to study/prepare for it and get much of an advantage. Once it became content based, this opened up a can of worms for the “prep” industry.

It should not be a crime for wealthy people to buy their kids into top colleges. The problem here is with laws that have driven the process into the shadows.

There ought to be perks available for being rich. Otherwise, we might as well be governed by the Khmer Rouge.

This has always been an issue. In the old days, if you were rich, your parents donated money to the college and you got in no matter how stupid you were. These days, its more sneaky. They pretend that you are smart to maintain the illusion that they are an elite university. Hence the “cheating.”

“Parents are willing to do pretty much anything to get their kids into good schools,”

Because they feel it is their ticket to a better life, and they are not wrong. Employers have totally swallowed the Kool-Aid, and obtaining a degree from an elite school, by hook or by crook, really WILL get you further than merit in many cases.

I am personally aware of blithering idiots who can't tie their shoes and chew gum who are holding down top-level executive jobs because they somehow managed to graduate from one of these schools. When I was young I actually got accepted to a fairly elite school, but did not go because my dad thought it was too expensive. Sorry, Dad, but in hindsight I should have borrowed two arms and a leg and gone. Over the years I have seen how it works. Employers see that school on your resume, they have their multiple orgasm, and they write you a check.

Sucks, but that's the way things appear to work in this century.

Also it looks like they are bribing individuals in the colleges l instead of the college as a whole. If you are a major donor for a new stadium your kid can get in, but it is dirty dirty bribery if you just slip the athletic director $20,000.

Thankfully I bypassed that crap for the near future, granted I work IT and for government contracts.

One thing life has taught me is that you will never go broke underestimating how shallow people can be.

All the admissions officials in every college, from Ivy League to Eastern Moo State U, are wondering if anyone will notice their new BMWs or Rolexes.

"It should not be a crime for wealthy people to buy their kids into top colleges."

If rich dad pays a million dollars to a university's endowment, of course a quid quo pro is expected. However it is called and treated as a gift instead of a bribe. Those receiving these payments in this case used the money for their personal gain, not for the university's common good. Therefore bribery. OF course this bribery pales to the legal graft that Congress receives.

True is that statement, but that’s just another reason why though I’m still young I’m just sick of the workplace, the games, assholes and politics plus the backstabbing too, already ready to retire.

We care and so should you!

Going to college should be based on meritocracy and was, once upon a time.

Do you also believe that rich blacks should get into colleges with far lower grades, SATS,and lack of extra curricular involvement over poor/middle class white kids, with better grades too...just because they are black? What about the black and Hispanic kids who not only get in without being equipped to even pass any Freshman year classes, due to Affirmative Action?

This really isn't about wealth; it's about CHEATING and LYING!

Exactly...back before the flood, when I took the PSAT and the SAT there wasn't much you could do, other than look at and practice old tests. And the scores were NOT based of the "feelings" of those who graded them.

These exams have not only been dumbed down, but have sections where there isn't one correct answer.

Then you’re against stealing/robbing others and banks being a crime; right?
