I used to work in the development organizations of two very famous schools in the greater Boston area. Development is a fancy word for fundraising. I can say with some degree of authority that this sort of thing, where "this sort of thing" = "you give us enough money to build something, or fund a chair, or whatever and your progeny just might get some special treatment from the admissions department"...has been going on since time immemorial.
