Years ago I was on a DC-10 that landed at San Jose, CA. After the plane slowed down the pilot increased the throttle to taxi and the middle engine had the loudest compressor stall bang that I have ever heard. Women screaming and many praying etc. About three weeks later Sioux City happened. It was an American Airlines plane I was on but I tried to stay off of DC-10’s until they were retired.

A bang and a flash - sounds like an engine surge. First thought would be bird strike. Or an impeller blade letting loose....

The 737 has been in the air since 1967. Suddenly they are having problems?

There are about 10,000 of them.

So, there are likely to be more than a few that have problems.

Panic is replacing reason.

I was on an MD80 from Atlanta to Raleigh/Durham - had fallen asleep and the plane was at cruising altitude. Heard a loud bang (thought we had hit something) - compressor stall - the pilot immediately did a U-turn and returned to Atlanta.

It’s a totally unrelated incident on a 737-900 which is an NG not a Max. The NG has been around for almost 22 years.
there have been over 7,000 built.

After learning the dangerous odds of flight I gave it up a plane with an ejection seat I would take.
90% of crashes are caused by pilot errors
that leaves 10% for errors in
Bad towers data
mechanical
electrical
maintenance
weather
Piss poor odds not worth the risk.

FFS . . . you have to wonder if FR is being invaded by plants from airbus.

the MSM doesn’t have enough crises to report on, so they’re going to create one.

“...but I tried to stay off of DC-10’s until they were retired.”

So then what? Did you fly them after that?

Just asking....

It’s just that there have been three in a short span of time, and two were catastrophic.

Boeing needs to get in front of this stat.

After every accident there is a spate of these reports as the MSM idiots glom on to everything as if it’s the same.

The reality is that things like this - probably engine surge due to inlet distortion or turbine blade failure - happen on occasion and have more to do with inspections and age related failures, not a software / operational mismatch like what appears to be the problem on the MAX.

Can’t wait to hear what the black box from Ethiopia reveals. Sounds like the Lion Air crash was the flight monitoring system - maybe that was related to the Ethiopia crash too, but it sounds like this was an engine failure.

Lion Air is a basket case airline that was banned from European airspace. That same plane had the same problem 4 flights in a row. It was criminal of the Lion Air managment to not fix the problem before allowing more flights. No airline in the US would have allowed that plane to be parked at a gate to fly passengers till the issue was fixed. Many Asian airlines are notorious for poor training and overemphasizing using the automation.

lol.. No I didn’t fly them after they were retired. Flew once DFW to SJC. Then the MD-11 came on line and American put 757’s on that route so I wasn’t faced with the issue.

Clearly a failure to calibrate the Fribulator before blast off.

Remember the rules, no facts or validated technical information allowed on these 737 threads. I makes all of the other comments look bad.

My guess is that there are emergencies like this that happen at least a few times a week that do not make the national news. Just making new because of the recent crashes.

Headline: More emergency landings at airports than you know

“They did touchdown safely, but these kinds of emergency landings occurred 66 times at JFK from February through June of this year.

That’s more than three times a week.

At Newark, 50 flights made emergency landings while 34 emergencies were declared at LaGuardia during the same 20 week period.”

https://abc7ny.com/archive/8441902/

That is at least 1 declared emergency for each major airport in the NY area each week.

Two different planes

Look the 737 Max8 has flown since 2017 without incident

The 737-900 has an even longer history.

Check maintenance records. Was it performed properly?? Or just signed off on??

What happened to this United flight sounds like a bird strike similar to this:
