Trump releases budget seeking billions for border wall, work requirements for welfare programs

President Trump kicked off a new battle with Congress on Monday by releasing his fiscal 2020 budget plan seeking billions more in funding for a border wall and controversial work requirements for Americans collecting a variety of welfare benefits

.Both proposals are sure to face resistance from Democrats, especially coming off a partial shutdown triggered by a border wall dispute that only ended when Trump declared a national emergency over immigration -- a step being litigated in the courts and challenged in Congress. The requests are part of the president's $4.7 trillion budget plan.

Meanwhile, the budget aims to implement new welfare requirements -- namely, that Americans 18-65 years old work at least 20 hours a week in a job, a job training program or a community service program to secure a range of benefits and aid.

According to the administration, the work requirement would apply to federal programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and federal housing, but would come with a hardship exemption. Last year, the administration opened the door for states to impose work requirements for Medicaid recipients. This part of the budget proposal would bring those work requirements to the federal level.

The proposal would represent an expansion of work requirements, though some already are in place. For the past several administrations, able-bodied recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps) have mostly had to work at least 80 hours a month -- while recipients of traditional welfare known as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) have also faced work requirements.

The only way to drain the swamp is send all the money back to the states..

Get rid of most departments...

We send the money and they they take there cut and send it back to us..

We are all slaves to the Feds

work requirements for Americans collecting a variety of welfare benefits

Only Democrats can do that. See "Bill Clinton."

Please show me the resolve from Republicans in the House or Senate to do this.

When Ryan was speaker, nothing happened....the spending party continued.

We still have too few real conservatives in leadership and need to continue what the Tea Party started....primary them out.

I have said this before..I would think that even a paraplegic would want to work if able to.
In fact, I saw a paraplegic working at a Wal-Mart as a greeter on my travels down south.
Their is dignity in work.
There is also meeting and working with people different than yourself.
I also worked with a guy who was twisted up in a wheelchair.

WHAT, you mean people collecting welfare benefits have to find WORK, GOOD HEAVENS/sarc
Having people on welfare is how the commies keep control over their flock..they dont want these people to EVER find jobs, if they found jobs they wouldn’t need welfare, and if they did not need welfare they would be independent and that is something the commie left does NOT want

All presidential budget proposals are DOA in Congress. Always have been, but the execrable media will spin it as a defeat for President Trump.

I could be mistaken but didn’t Obama end work requirements by executive order? I don’t recall him getting the law changed by congress. If this is correct, then can’t pdjt reinstitute them now by order?.

Hahaha. “Conservatives” in the GOPe want to gut err fix social security and Medicaid before they touch any of the DC bureaucracy. I’m all for making these programs solvent or even getting rid of them but it’s quite telling that DC can’t save a dime from DC before going after those programs.

One of the few things Trump does that I don’t fully agree with is blaming the Dems and letting the Repukes off completely free. Both parties are disasters. Trump needs a working majority and since the Dems won’t work with him on anything he has to support the Repukes hard. He would be wise to support some Dems in the next cycle (Those who aren’t afraid to say positive things about him). It may not work but we are certain supporting the Repukes won’t really work either

Slash Congressional salaries and budgets by 50%.
Then sign an EO stating that they can no longer vote themselves a raise.
That was a bad idea from the beginning;

The system makes it necessary for Trump to kiss the GOP ass if he is interested in a second term.....and it seems as if he is interested.

So, we can “hope” that Trump is far different with the GOP when he does not need to worry about a re-election campaign.

A balanced budget is ALWAYS 10 - 20 years in the future. It’s like a bow wave on a boat...always out front, never in reach.

I’ve known more than one unmarried mother on welfare/MCaid/WIC/EBT/what-have-you, proudly refer to themselves as a “stay-at-home mom.” They missed the concept that the term used to imply there was a breadwinner in the workforce FROM THAT HOUSEHOLD.

Back in 1978, when I was still in college, I worked for one contractor, Lockheed, who was milking the taxpayer. They were a contractor for Job Corps in Detroit. It was a total waste of taxpayer money. I did little work, for a substantial paycheck, and accomplished nothing in the way of increasing the intellect of the students, who were their only to get their stipend for showing up each day.

Every time I drive by the Job Corps building in Grand Rapids, I think, what a total F’n waste of taxpayher’s monies.

When congress wants a raise they need to ask their constituents.
If we think you doing a good job then you get a raise otherwise FO.

Sick of that unmarried mother scam. Spit out one, maybe given support for child only (and I’m beginning to rethink even that)! But making a career out of brooding needs to be castrated.
