Chinas central bank governor on Sunday affirmed an official promise to avoid manipulating its currency to boost exports, an issue he said American and Chinese negotiators discussed in their latest talks aimed at ending a tariff war.
Yi Gang gave no indication the two sides reached agreements beyond previous commitments produced by meetings of the Group of 20 major economies. He spoke at a news conference during the annual meeting of Chinas ceremonial legislature.
We stress that we will never use the exchange rate for competitive purposes, nor will we use it to boost Chinas exports, Yi said.
Yi took part in the latest talks in Washington aimed at ending a conflict over Beijings technology ambitions that has prompted both sides to raise tariffs on billions of dollars of each others goods. That has fueled fears it might depress slowing global economic growth.

Be interesting to see how this all ends up. I don’t believe a word the Chinese say anymore.
We should just put on the tariffs. Its good for everyone. Vietnam and other countries are beginning to take on the business that China is giving off. And China is doing bad things with their excess money. They grow their military. They build buildings that are never used. They pollute worse than anyone else. If America added 25% tariffs on China you would see China acting better. And you would see our debt go down. Other poorer countries would do better. And yes there would be some things that get more expensive. But not as much as you think. Between moving to cheaper countries and lowering the prices for competitive reasons, most of the tariffs would not be seen buy the American consumer.
I don’t believe the Red Chinese ever. But like the god of this world, they would tend to mix lies and truth, so one always has to watch out for the lie that hides behind whatever turns out to be true.
