Ohio delays 3 executions after judge compares process to 'waterboarding'

March 7 (UPI) -- Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Thursday delayed the executions of three men on death row and asked corrections officials to review alternative methods of lethal injection after a federal judge compared the state's current process to waterboarding.

The order came after Magistrate Judge Michael Merz issued a reprieve of execution for Warren Henness in January. The judge said Ohio's three-drug protocol for lethal injection would likely cause Henness "severe pain and needless suffering."

Ohio was one of several states to alter the traditional drug protocol it used for decades in lethal injections after European drug companies refused to sell pentobarbital, commonly used in executions, over ethical concerns. The state began using midazolam, a sedative, in executions in 2017.

There are devices routinely used to kill animals painlessly that are perfectly appropriate for these cases.

If they insist on the lethal injection nonsense, why don’t they just use fentanyl or heroin? For that matter, why not just hang the bastards?

Interestingly there are 13 steps. And if the knots are tied correctly, there should be 13 wraps.

"Have the perp sit in a room with his favorite car. Start the engine. Check back in 30 minutes. The price - maybe a gallon of gas."

Too cumbersome and expensive. Better....plastic bag, rubber band, length of tubing, tank of nitrogen.

That drug that killed Michael Jackson will put a person down so easy and so fast that it’s hard to figure why they don’t use it.

The judge did not have enough info to make a comparison so, I suggest he be first injected with a death dose. If he lives, then subject him to water boarding. Then he can make a valid evaluation.

After someone has been waterboarded, can’t they just walk away with no cuts, bruises or broken bones? I don’t think that the lawyer who happened to become a judge can make a connection in this instance?

“severe pain and needless suffering.” would he have sed this if his wife and daughters were raped and murdered by this fiend. 1 rope for the perp and 1 rope for the judge

Put it on scales... The possibility that the inmate might experience the sensation of choking (the waterboarding concern) vs being incarcerated for decades.

I'm relatively sure that even if the survey population was strictly limited to death row inmates that the poll results would show they'd prefer the possibility of maybe experiencing a choking sensation for a short period of time.

Warehousing inmates, at least to me, is far more cruel and unusual. If they are unfit to ever rejoin society, then put them out of their misery.

What’s wrong with giving the killer an OVERDOSE of Heroin?

Addicts often do this to themselves accidentally — so it cannot be deemed to be “unconstitutionally” painful.

And, IMHO, it’s a good way to dispose of heroin seized in drug raids. Sort of a two-fer for garbage disposal.

And, finally, it may persuade vulnerable people that “experimenting” with illegal drugs is a bad idea and therefore SAVE lives.

Not sure what the best punishment is, but for death row cases, the main thing seems to be to get that perp out of society rather permanently. Maybe let the punishment fit the crime? In earlier days, I don’t think the comfort of the convicted was of prime consideration.

Just the fentanyl would be sufficient. No needle needed. He could snort enough to be dirt-napping in a minute or two. Plus the drug can be obtained from the cops’ seizures stash.

"...After someone has been waterboarded, can’t they just walk away ..."

Yes, waterboarding causes no physical pain at all. The drowning reflex is psychologically devastating; but when it's over only the memories remain.

That's one of the reasons it is not inherently torture.

Firing squad. Quick, painless, cheap, effective.

Put them to a good use. After testing for presence of diseases or poisons, put them under anesthesia, remove all usable parts (heart, kidneys, liver, eyes, skin and bone for grafts, etc.), drain the blood for the blood bank and cremate the rest.

If diseased or drug saturated, go ahead and shoot 'em.
