Despite the official explanation, neither was the Liberty “incident”. The Liberty was an electronic surveillance (spy) ship and the Israelis aren’t - and never were - so inept as to attack anything without knowing its identity. At the time, the US was trying to walk a fine line between Egypt and Israel and the Liberty was monitoring (spying on) Israel, which was engaged in the Six-Day War.
