In an effort to address wage equity among women and members of minority groups, Google studied its own practices as it does every year. But the results showed the company was underpaying more men than women for doing similar jobs, The New York Times first reported Monday.
Google compensated 10,677 employees an extra $9.7 million to offset the underpaid wages found in the study, the company wrote in a blog post, though it's unclear what percentage of those recipients were men. In 2017, Google said it increased compensation for 228 employees it found were underpaid, spending a total of about $270,000.
Google's 2018 analysis found that in one group of lower-level software engineers men "received less discretionary funds than women," according to the post authored by Google's lead analyst for pay equity and people analytics Lauren Barbato. Nearly half of the adjustment fund was spent on discrepancies in offers to new hires, Barbato wrote, which was the result of a new hire analysis Google conducted in the 2018 study.
Google outlined its methodology for the report, saying it runs statistical analysis to "look for unexplained differences in total compensation (salary, bonus, and equity) across demographic groups." Google analyzed every job group with at least 30 employees total and at least five per demographic group. The analysis included 91 percent of Google employees.

And why aren’t these “men” protesting in the streets demanding equal pay?
IN California, that would likely constitute a hate crime.
That’s discrimination isn’t it? Oh wait, it’s like white on black crime and black on white crime. One is racist and the other isn’t.
And so did they give those men the money they were underpaid?

It does seem to imply they proved systematic discrimination against men.
That said, ultimately, only YOU are responsible for the amount you make. Any given company is going to have a somewhat unique distribution. Even with engineers, there’s no such thing as a “generic engineer”, they all have unique experiences that may or may not hold more or less value to a given employer.
Maybe in the least it shows that, at Google, women are earning “about what they should be” and can make no claim of 78c on the dollar.
Because we are too busy working, trying to support our families.
more men than women
google employs far more men than women so naturally more men make less than women. More men make the same and more men make more than women. That’s what happens when you employ more men.
I think Google should be de-platformed for their egregious act of gender bias.
Men ask for, negotiate for and get more money.
It’s time for women to learn thefts of business!!!
Talk about a wage gap!
