Undeterred by summit collapse, Moon vows closer North ties

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Friday his government plans to discuss with the United States the possibility of restarting joint inter-Korean economic projects to induce nuclear disarmament from North Korea.

Moon's comments during a nationally televised speech came a day after a high-stakes nuclear summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un collapsed over what the Americans saw as excessive North Korean demands for sanctions relief in exchange for limited disarmament steps...(snip)

..."I vow to help usher in an era of a peace-driven economy on the Korean Peninsula," said Moon, who preaches that South Korea should be in the "driver's seat" in international efforts to deal with the North. However, if the nuclear negotiations derail, Moon could potentially face a serious dilemma over whether to continue to engage with the North or join another U.S.-led pressure campaign against it.

Big money to be made in NK by Moon’s donors.
As Trump knows.
Money makes the world go ‘round.

Kim knows it too.

I wonder if the sudden walk-out was planned by both leaders so they could go home and say, “See we are being tough on the other guys!” Then they could come back and agree to some of the things the did not agree to on this trip. And the South Korean leader can continue to bridge the gap and keep the negotiating process moving forward.

That’s how diplomacy works.
(Also bribes and blackmail.)

I was thinking the same thing. Make it look like it’s a really tough negotiation so Kim saves face and doesn’t look like he bowed to America. President Trump understands how important it is to let the other guy have a way out. Also makes the media and nay sayers look even dumber. 🇺🇸

Moon is doing what is politically expedient for himself.

Maintaining a dialogue is a good thing; rewarding Little Kim for going back on his word, for disregarding the words he agreed to in Singapore is not.

Trump isn't going to agree to any amount of play acting with a dictator, that is hardly his style. The Norks know what our position is: complete, irreversible and verifiable denuclearization. But some of the generals aren't on board yet, so it could be a while yet.

Pompeo or Trump revealed a lot in one of their statements when they said that Little Kim had a message to take back to his generals. Little Kim is in power for just as long as the generals allow him to be. The Norks are a military dictatorship with him as a figurehead. The amount of actual power or flexibility he has is questionable and the real powers-that-be back in North Korea are very concerned about giving up any of the perks they presently enjoy.

The Norks are being coached by the most underhanded, backstabbing pack of liars on the planet, the ChiComs. As a friend of mine has shared from his significant experience dealing with them,

"...once you sign a contract with the Chinese Communists is when the real negotiation process begins..."

We're not even that far with the Norks yet. They have signed previous agreements with the group of four (or five? Whatever) and always broken their word. They will never stick to their word unless you keep a club handy to hold over their heads. That is how their feudal system still works. To a lesser degree, that is still how it works in the PRC.

Most Korean conservatives loathe Moon and his communist sympathies. He does not have good intentions.

I get the need to want to cheer on negotiations but I notice most people on FR know very little about how SOUTH Korean politics works, not to mention who Moon Jae In is, what his intentions are, his party platform, etc...there are very legitimate reasons why Koreans in particular..the good, conservative ones are skeptical of any meaningful progress happening with Moon at the helm. No matter how good Trump’s intentions may be.

So called concessions from Kim Jong Un are often manipulative. And also, China and Russia are just as much if not more of major players than South Korea is in terms of controlling the dynamic of the peninsula.

As NK is now, only Kim and a few of his friends have anything of value to lose.

Such is the way of the socialist dung heap.

Moon's overly conciliatory posture toward DPRK and his vision of reunification has weakened Trump's position from the beginning. Pushing to reconcile via 'joint inter-Korean economic projects' weakens the sanctions and puts money in NK's coffers without actually forcing Kim to give up his weapons programs. It also means ROK investments in the north that they will not want to lose, weakening their hand in future negotiations.

If North Korea is economically tied to South Korea, this is good. The South Korean economy would dominate.

true that Russia and China are major players, but SK is neighbor-in-law, so letting SK feel involved is also important.

Trump walked because Kim wanted all UN/US sanctions other than nuclear lifted. He wants the economic freedom taken from him. And he’s realizing what economic freedom really means (and so are his generals). Economic freedom means relief for his people and a higher standard of living, but it also means more money for nuclear programs, sanctions or no.

Trump wants verifiable destruction of the entire nuclear program before giving Kim that key to economic freedom. That has been our stance, and the stance of the UN, from the git-go. Trump sent a strong message by walking away, we’re not playing games any more, but at the same time Trump may be using Moon to continue to wave a small carrot in front of NK - one or two trade opportunities but only with SK..and only in exchange for xyz. Kim is doing a little ‘official state visit’ with the Vietnamese today which is another carrot - you ‘could’ trade with us but right now you can’t unless you do abc, kinda message. Remembering it’s not just Trump negotiating, but Trump negotiating for all of the UN members who sanctioned NK and continue to be threatened by NK nukes.

All we see playing out is the south east Asian chess match. China wants control and is doing it slowly and methodically thru kim. By refusing a deal with the US it puts the south back in the cross hairs and desperately thinking they can negotiate on their own. We may see down the line a treaty between north and south and a request by the south to remove US troops from their soil convincingly suggested by kim if they want a lasting peace and economic partner. This will put them in bed with kim and china

I disagree. Trump hasn’t given up. By a long shot. Now I haven’t mentioned this before, but it’s obvious and should be said. Trump is over there negotiating, Kim wants to denuke, but there’s a trust issue. Why is there a trust issue? Because back home our congresscritters and press are screetching to the rooftops that our President is a liar and a cheat, can’t be trusted, impeachable, and will probably not get re-elected. Why the hell would Kim disarm hearing all that? Seriously? It’s not that Kim doesn’t trust Trump, he does, he doesn’t trust our congresscritters to undo what Trump will accomplish. The Dems know this, they thought it through when they scheduled their hearings to coincide with each of Trump’s foreign trips. They want him to fail. That they dumped on him immediately, what did they say, ‘amateur hour?’ was proof enough of that. So was their attempt to try do distract the public with completely inappropriate timing to address the Otto issue. Trump has accomplished what no other president has been able to do - get Kim to sit down twice, with an eye on the future and the door still open. And they hate him for it. Because he’s orange.

Good cop, bad cop. The “failure” of talks probably works out well for both. President Trump sends a strong message to China that “no deal” is always an option for him rather than accepting a bad deal. Kim gets to go back as the leader who didn’t cave to the big bad west - but then later on will deal with the “far more reasonable” SK government.

Got it. I am just stressing the fact that Moon Jae In and his party are bad news. I suggest you look at what happened to the former president of SK...it was a Mueller investigation on steroids that actually succeeded. ugh though even that story has had inadequate presentation in English media.
