A former San Francisco attorney serving a life sentence in the dog-mauling death of a Saint Marys College lacrosse coach nearly two decades ago will remain in prison for at least another three years.

Her husband Robert Noel served four years for involuntary manslaughter. He was not home at the time of the attack. The Bay Area Reporter reported Noel died in June on his 77th birthday.

This is the couple that bred exotic, enormous, vicious Presa Canario fighting dogs for their "adopted son" who was (and still is) doing a life sentence in the California prison system; at the time, the "son," named Paul "Cornfed" Schneider, was in the SHU at Pelican Bay, and was an active member of the Aryan Brotherhood.
One night the dogs mauled to death their neighbor, a young woman named Diane Whipple.
Marjorie Knoller and her husband Robert Noel were a couple of pieces of work. Both attorneys, they blamed Ms. Whipple for inciting the attack until it became clear that that defense was causing them more harm than good; that moment of clarity occurred at or about the time that they were both arrested.
Here's a pretty good Rolling Stone article about the case: Mad Dogs & Lawyers .
I was reminded of this case while reading the thread about the service dog who attacked the little girl in the Portland airport (look down the page a little).
That couple was evil. They just didn’t give a damn.
I agree. A couple of real psychos, but they lived in San Francisco and so seemed relatively normal.
What a story! Completely forgot about it until now. Convicting these reprobates restored my faith in humanity.
Go to the article and photos. Kimberly Guilfoyle was on the prosecution team.
I recall that case. For some reason, the late lawyer Melvin Belli also comes up in my memory about the dogs. Maybe because he was said to have allowed his own huge dogs full and free movement throughout his expensive apartment. They left it covered in poo.
That was before she came over to the winning side.
How the hell did the guy go to jail? He wasnt even home at the time of the attack? Good grief.
Kimberly Guilfoyle, prosecutor
she served as an Assistant District Attorney from 2000 to 2004. While Assistant D.A., she earned a conviction while co-prosecuting with James Hammer in the 2002 case People v. Noel and Knoller
Remember that well, she and her husband or live in or whatever we’re real pieces of work.
It’s good she was denied parole but surprised she is up for it already.
Melvin Belli was also one of the few people to talk to the Zodiac killer and question him, by phone.
Also, he played a key role in one of the best episodes of Star Trek, which was called And the Children Shall Lead. In it, he portrays an evil being that appears to a group of children to be an angel and a savior; he convinces the children to massacre their parents. He played the part extremely well, with real power and frightening sincerity.
It was one of the episodes that convinced me (as an adult, years later) that Gene Roddenberry was — if not an actual conservative — at least not a liberal.
He helped raise the dogs and protected them from being put out of the apartment by using his legal skills to intimidate and harass people neighbors who complained.
Noel was convicted of involuntary manslaughter; Marjorie Knoller was convicted of second-degree murder.
Prosecuting people with killer dogs is bad, but adultery with a Trump son is “the winning side”?
Any day now, SMOD ...
Oh, I forgot to mention that the victim was a lesbian. This fact put them in a difficult position with respect to their San Francisco jury.
Also, neither of them ever showed the slightest remorse for what had happened. They blamed the victim, and also lashed out at the San Francisco prosecutor’s office for persecuting them.
Kimberly Guilfoyle does absolutely nothing for me. I don’t think she’s attractive, and is not otherwise interesting in the least.
Why she is any sort of celebrity is a mystery to me.
Thanks for the additional backstory.
I miss Kimberly sitting in the ‘leg’ chair on The Five.
And the way she tore into Juan Williams was fun to see.
There were indications that the woman had engaged in a carnal relationship with the male dog, and had sent pictures of the proceedings to their "son" in jail.
They were exceedingly strange, deviant, and pathological. They acted like people who had given themselves over to an evil spirit, and were proud of having done so.
I feel so old; I remember when this happened, and didn’t realize it’s been nearly 20 years...
Same here. Doesn’t seem that long ago.
It was one of the things that was going on in the months before everything changed on 9-11-01.
Other things that were going on that year: oxycontin was in the news, and the Chandra Levy murder story.
