'Pawn Stars' host Rick Harrison compares socialism to heroin: 'The first shot is great... then .."

NATIONAL HARBOR – "Pawn Stars” host Rick Harrison injected some humor into his CPAC speech on Thursday afternoon.

Harrison, the star of the History channel show and an outspoken conservative, delivered his speech on ‘the stupidity of socialism’ at one of the largest annual gatherings of conservatives just outside Washington, D.C.

“The majority [of] people in this room know that socialism is just stupid,” he said.

“It’s literally like heroin. The first shot is great. For a little bit it’s wonderful, but then the rest of your life is a living hell. And that’s literally what the socialists are doing.”

He continued later in the speech: “Once you give someone something it’s hard to take it away… then you get Venezuela.”

The rise of socialism has been a hot topic at CPAC, with two prominent GOP House Oversight Committee members warning of “radicals” in the Democratic Party and saying they believe congressional Democrats are laying the foundation for Trump impeachment efforts.

But wait. This time it will be different. Just because!

I compare socialism to those get rich quick scams that are repackaged and marketed as something new and REVOLUTIONARY. Like buying real estate with no $$$ down. Or how any one with no experience in high finance can make a killing in stocks regardless of market conditions. Or investing thousands in the latest snake oil while building a downline or some other unworkable pyramid racket. They’ll tell you other systems failed because they were implemented wrong but they have a proven system that works that works. Those 4 deadly words THIS TIME IT’S DIFFERENT! And like the hippies before them so many millenials fall for this crap like so many brainwashed little puppies.

> There is no great “first shot” of socialism. <

But there certainly appears to be a great first shot. And that’s why socialism is so seductive. It’s something we conservatives need to recognize, and warn folks about.

Awhile back I was reading an article about Venezuelan chicken farmers. They could raise a chicken for - say - two bolivars. Then they sold it for around three bolivars.

But then the socialists took over. They decreed that no chicken could be sold for more than one bolivar. And that was the great “first shot”. Cheap chickens for everybody!

But of course that couldn’t last. No farmer could raise chickens at a loss. So now no chickens for anybody. Except for the socialist elite.

It’s true that for some reason human beings enjoy the schadenfreude of seeing those above them knocked down a peg, that’s what socialism does.

And that is the problem with trying to conduct a revolution while not calling it a revolution, in a sense leading the unsuspecting woman(read the American voting public) down the primrose path of gilded promises to the demise of her innocence. Eventually the smooth talking wolf will have to make his intentions known and put his plans into action before the sweet innocent has time to make her escape...or to pull her 9mm pistol out and blow his balls off!

It isn’t but the idea is appealing at first to the average person (especially young people) until it’s too late and they’ve realize what a colossal mistake it is and their freedoms are gone. That’s his point

For me, just getting the stuff tested that they find in the spoils is interesting. Having the items studied to see what they actually are, and possibly dating them is progress to me.

I liked the show, too. I dropped satellite in 2016, so I haven't seen an episode since. My biggest issue with the show was 55 minutes worth of filler and commercials, with 5 minutes of actual cool stuff. They could boil the entire season down to one good show. I'd still watch it.

Disclaimer- I know socialism is bad

But when people make statements like this, I want to ask how he gets his mail. Or if he ever calls the police/fire department. Or driven on a highway. Used a public school or library. Besides the obvious SS and MC

You could make the argument we have already been a socialist country for a long time, just not a communist dictatorship. And for everything other countries do, just not health insurance

As for “Oak Island Mystery”, which I think you’re referring to, I got bored with that show in about 5 minutes. Nothing ever happens.

I absolutely love it!

As a kid I read about the Oak Island mystery when I read a Reader's Digest in 1965. I can still remember I was at my friend, Douglas Attaway's house, when I read it. It made quite an impression.

Well, I found out tons of kids had read that same article including one of the searchers leading this current attempt: Rick Lagina (who talked his money bags brother, Marty, into financing his childhood dream).

They started in 2006, but things went extraordinarily slow until History Channel agreed to make a reality show out of their chase. It finally became the Highest rated show on the channel and now that History Channel is kicking in, Marty and his investors have loosened the purse strings and sophisticated and heavy equipment have been brought to bear.

Last year they found a lead cross that looks like in came from the Templars and recovered two bones that carbon date from the 17th century and belonged to someone from Europe and the other from the Middle East.

This year they have located an iron bolt that one expert believes may be from a Roman Pilum(!) and they created a coffer dam that has allowed them to excavate "Smith's Cove" (long believed to be the source of sea water that flooded the original Money Pit and has foiled all attempts to date).

Under the floor of Smith's Cove they recently uncovered a concrete wall in an area that was always underwater, even during low tide.

Now I have never heard rumours that the Romans ever made deep water craft capable of crossing the Atlantic, but, boy howdy, it's fun to speculate!

I agree. I record every program I watch on the DVR, so I can fast-forward through all that commercial crap. I hate commercials, and refuse to watch them.

Every country with government health care has a population aching to get rid of it. People prefer FREEDOM!

This country used to be free. But then the FAR LEFT idiots in the FDR administration screwed us up AND got us into WWII, which led to NATO, the UN, and all the other globalization. Pat Buchanan was right. We should have made a deal with Germany and stayed out of the European theater.
