I am positive, that people of every race, at one time in their life have made a very inappropiate statement, and later they realized what a stupid thing to say. So...let’s let John Waynes name stay, for all the good American movies he made. What do you say.

Wayne, who was 63 at the time of the interview, said he believed in “white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility.”

This was not an uncommon sentiment at the time, and was probably more a reflection of what happened when Europeans granted independence in Africa. The brutal killings in Kenya (Mau Mau, prior to independence), Congo (Stanleyville massacre), and Uganda (which was ongoing under Obote at the time of this interview) led many people to hold similar positions - and it wasn’t regarded as “racist”. There was almost a sympathy for blacks that had been handed power with no training; millions (of blacks) died since then. Almost a million died in Rwanda alone in less than a year in the 1990s...
