Critics are calling for the John Wayne Airport in Southern California to be renamed after a 1971 "Playboy" interview resurfaced this week.
A Los Angeles Times opinion piece from earlier this week highlighted opinions the former movie star voiced in the interview on black people, gay people and Native Americans.
Wayne, who was 63 at the time of the interview, said he believed in "white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility."
He also mentioned "tests" which proved black people did not have "requisite background" to attend college.
When asked which films he called "perverted," Wayne listed 1969s Easy Rider and Midnight Cowboy, before using anti-gay slurs to discuss the films.
Wayne said that Native Americans were "were selfishly trying to keep" the U.S. "for themselves."
Orange County today is such an economically and ethnically diverse community that its hard to justify asking any member of that community to board planes at an airport named after an outspoken racist and homophobe, with his strutting statue occupying a central niche in front of the concourse, columnist Michael Hiltzik wrote for the LA Times.
Some have come to Wayne's defense, saying that it is unfair to call out an interview from 50 years ago.
Removing his name from Orange Countys airport now only validates what many Americans are coming to believe: You cant say anything anymore, darn it, without being discovered and punished by the mob, Madeline Fry wrote in the Washington Examiner.

Drive to Lax then...............
No worries, AOC and her Commie cronies intend to eliminate commercial airlines within ten years. So, no need for airports. Problem solved, sarc/
They want to take John Wayne’s name off of it because he is a symbol of “toxic masculinity”.
I remember Orange County from the ‘50’s, 60’s and early ‘70’s and haven’t been back since 1975. . It must be a shithole today. What a waste.
The SPLC just marked you down as committing a thought crime - oops, I mean 'hate crime'...
Bush, Trump, Christianity, marriage, - they can mess with them if they want.
But dont mess around with John Wayne.
What Jussie Smollett did wasn't very smart, but I don't think that's what Wayne was referring to.

Dr. King was right. But the word he used to describe these heathen freaks was too mild.
Dont do that it lets me know where to look while house hunting
I don’t really think the Duke would want his name on an airport in the communist state of Cauliphonya anyway. Probably just as well they rename it the Barack Obama Airport Bong Shop and Adult Book Store.
Wayne, who was 63 at the time of the interview, said he believed in “white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility.”
This was not an uncommon sentiment at the time, and was probably more a reflection of what happened when Europeans granted independence in Africa. The brutal killings in Kenya (Mau Mau, prior to independence), Congo (Stanleyville massacre), and Uganda (which was ongoing under Obote at the time of this interview) led many people to hold similar positions - and it wasn’t regarded as “racist”. There was almost a sympathy for blacks that had been handed power with no training; millions (of blacks) died since then. Almost a million died in Rwanda alone in less than a year in the 1990s...
The 1st Amendment says the government can’t punish us for things we say.
And now, what is our government considering doing?
So then, the procedure for liberal radical types is:
1. Dig and dig into old interviews or statements made by people who you dislike.
2. Use these decades old statements, made in a different time with different cultural norms, and proclaim that such person is racist sexist xenophobic homophobic etc.
3. Stir up outrage that someone many years ago did not have a 21st century politically correct conscience or worldview.
4. Proclaim that the reviled person is this unfit to have any public facility named in his honor.
5. Drum up support to change the name of any place named for the reviled person.
Is this really a major crisis? That an airport is named for John Wayne, and our liberal overlords complain that the minority population of Orange county, must of course be offended by such name?
Even some Leftists touted the idea of “Recolonialization” albeit this time for more humane reasons.
Life is hard, it’s even harder if your stupid.
At least Dennis Hopper became a Conservative later in life.
Might as well, I’m sure The Duke would be ashamed to be associated with much of what society has become. He’d probably offer to shove his Oscars where the sun don’t shine too, except they’d enjoy it.
That viewpoint makes sense. I have a dim memory of the “plot” of that supposed classic.
They renamed Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis because Calhoun owned slaves or something four hundred years ago.

Just this week a “Freeper” swore up and down that Margaret Sanger was a lifelong conservative Republican.
