On a completely unrelated note:

No. We are not going to give up our guns. Ever. We don’t care what excuses you claim make it necessary.

“No. We are not going to give up our guns. Ever. We don’t care what excuses you claim make it necessary.”

They know that some won’t, that is for sure. But just how many won’t? Once the laws are in place that make people felons simply for still owning a gun or even ammunition, then the ‘public examples’ will come, complete with CNN filming the raids of selected people, after police were tipped off by a neighbor, former friend, ex-wife, or simply their child honestly answering a question at school or at the doctor’s office. Or maybe they used their now-illegal gun for home defense during a break-in - guess who gets 10 years for that? Hint, not the criminal doing the break-in.

Then the ‘buy-backs’, and for good money. And the guns pile in, just as happened in Australia, and the country is now mostly disarmed.

And then the politics turn. For example, I know an avid gun owner who lives in Japan. In Japan, don’t even think about buying or owning a gun - not going to happen there. Guess what, he is FINE WITH IT, in Japan, since he also knows that he won’t have to be facing down the barrel of a 357 pointed at him. I point this out because once most gun-owners are disarmed, and that WILL HAPPEN with the policies and laws that I described above, many people who had previously defended the Second Amendment no longer will - since they’ll want the government to try even harder to disarm the holdouts (here I’m talking about gangs and such, not FReepers, of course - but for the government, any gun owner is fair game).

Sure, there will still be 10% or so of the country who hang on to their guns, hoping to hell they don’t get caught. But then what good are the guns, other than in a true doomsday scenario (after all, you’re not taking them to the range, and you cannot even buy ammo for them - maybe for the case where your wife is about to be raped, and you figure that it’s worth the 10 years in jail to stop the guy)? And yes, slowly those people die off and their kids want nothing to do with their hardware (or it gets permanently buried in the ground somewhere)...and it’s all over, and then then, as a formality, the Second Amendment is rescinded by later amendment, to make sure that the United States never again becomes a country associated with private ownership of firearms.

But NONE OF THE ABOVE can happen, unless they win 2 or 3 elections in a row.
