Next week the University of California, San Diegos prestigious Scripps Institution of Oceanography is the location for an intriguing academic conference. Its devoted to the microorganisms that exist on and within all of us. But participation by a much larger type of organism will be significantly restricted.
The microbiome describes the community of tiny living things that exist on a human body, for example, while the metabolome describes chemicals found in a particular biological sample, such as blood. The UC San Diego website informs:
"During the first day of this event, leading researchers will present on the emerging science of the Urobiome and its recently discovered implications for human health, including common conditions such as urinary tract infection, urinary incontinence and bladder overactivity.
The following two days will feature high-impact presentations on the latest discoveries in microbiome sciences, with sessions on topics ranging from the microbiome in human disease and wellness and the metabolome, to primate microbiomes, to environmental and ocean microbiomes. For this first edition, we have decided to demonstrate that it is possible to have a large representation of women presenters in a scientific meeting by inviting only women speakers."
No male humans allowed at the podium? According to the schools website, at least as of January 2018 the student conduct code prohibits violations of the Universitys community standards. Such violations include:
"Conduct (e.g. harassment) that is so severe and/or pervasive, and objectively offensive, and that so substantially impairs a persons access to University programs or activities that the person is effectively denied equal access to the Universitys resources and opportunities."

Freedom of association. It’s a conference... if they want to limit participation, I don’t have a problem with it. Unless, some argument can be made that the conference itself is a pubic accommodation from which other benefits flow, such as future scholastic appointments, that would be unavailable to men in some other, possibly male-only venue.
A private institution-CAN do whatever they want.
Any institution in receipt of Federal or state funding should understand its continued and successful operation requires that its decision making and operating is expected to be in line with the US Constitution.
Easy Peasy
And nowhere for the fish to park their bicycles.
It’s UCSD. A state funded university. That means public funds.
That means they don’t get to discriminate that way.
In general, conferences are places where academics seek to advance the reputations and careers.
It’s become the University of Nazifornia.
Then: Women need men like fish need bicycles.
Now: Men need women like birds need anchors.
Behind a paywall.
Is there a place where the article is posted so i can read it w/o having to pay for it?
Macho, macho microbiologist
I wanna be a macho microbiologist
Of course a man will be standing by, in case anything goes wrong.
Mens liberation is here and it is here now
That could have been a Weird Al song.

No mention of chicks only. In any case, guys have bladders, too. Why focus just on chick bladders?
Lots and lots of talking and if someones birthday is detected everything will stop to celebrate.
Sorry.
The USC facilities MIS department at one time.
A conference is exactly what you said. Scientific collaborations and information about funding opportunities come from scientific conferences. The benefits of conferences are so well recognized in the scientific community that even someone like meI havent done research in years, but oversee several researcherscan come up with a strong justification to go. So blocking men from participating is pure discrimination and serves no real purpose.
I should also point out that women are represented in the life sciences just fine. Its not the case where UCSD is giving women a chance to participate in a venue from which they have been traditionally excluded.
OTOH, here is a great opportunity for a lot of men to identify as women during the course of this conference. Anything to drive the identitarians into a tizzy.
Sexist basta**s! The Feds should yank all funding to the school...and to the schools of anyone who attends. These sexist oafs are getting very tiresome.
All the male attendees should insist that be called Susan and respect their life choices.
