Get ready to break out your recipes for roadkill. Eating wild animals killed by a car could soon become legal in California. Senator Bob Archuleta introduced a so-called you kill it, you grill it bill at the Capitol this week. The bill reads, each year it is estimated that over 20,000 deer alone are hit by vehicles on California roadways. This translates into hundreds of thousands of pounds of healthy meat that could be utilized to feed those in need. Its a recipe for unusual dinnertime conversation.

My Eastern-Connecticut relatives (that’s the side of CT AWAY from NYC) have taken home dozens of roadkill deer over the years. A nice, big deer probably only generates about 50-60 pounds of meat, but even if half of that is inedible due to trauma, that’s still 25-30 pounds of meat.
And frankly, you don’t run over a deer. You smash your car into it, mostly clipping its legs out from under him and sending his head towards the windshield. The one I saw them take home had broken legs and (probably) a broken neck. Not THAT much trauma from anywhere you’re going to get meat from.
Hey, kudos to the California legislature...they’re actually doing what they should do - both looking out for their citizens AND planning in advance. After all, when the rest of their policies make California into Venuzuela, you want people practiced up in how to make Roadkill Helper.
