It was, the Mexican Brown Bear (Grizzlies are sub-species of Brown Bears) was hunted to extinction.

Actually, the Grizzly was native to northern Mexico and the Big Bend area and far west Texas areas but was killed off by ranchers. The last Grizzly killed in Texas was in 1900 in the Davis Mountains. Last Grizzly killed in Mexico was in1976 in Sonora region. However, I’m for restocking in Texas in the Guadalupe’s or Big Bend area.
