sadora Bielsky's tax bill this year brought her to tears. Last year, her family of four's refund topped $3,600. This year, the Colorado family owed in the thousands.
"I plugged it all in and at first I thought oh my goodness we're getting $8,000 back and then I realized it was the wrong color so I went back in and checked everything and then I started to cry," Bielsky said.
Many Americans are learning their tax refund is not as much as they expected, or they are receiving a big tax bill. The average refund compared to last year has dropped nearly nine percent, according to the IRS. This is the first tax season since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act went into effect.
Owing just over $8,000 was bad enough but Bielsky said it felt even worse because last year, she went on the IRS website to make sure the government withheld enough taxes from her and her husband's paychecks.
"I have a PhD in neuroscience, my husband had an MD. If we can't figure this out, and we can't rely on the IRS and their calculators to give us the right information, what are we supposed to do?" Bielsky said.
William Gale, the co-director of the Tax Policy Center, said many Americans did get a tax cut but unless they made the correct changes to their withholding, the money may have wound up in their paychecks last year in smaller amounts.

Forgot to add “dumb*ss”. Evidently, basic math eludes her, and so does honesty.
Wow, all I am is a high school graduate but I figured it out.
My tax bill this season will likely be around $4,000

You both must be tarded if you think a high refund means you pay less taxes.
Wow, how instructive..!
Good post..!
I can just imagine the wages of these upper class workers. What benefits did these rich people lose?
Sounds like a little pride issue is in play with all those big letters following their names.
A PhD in Neuroscience is not the same as a PhD in Accounting.
ZERO reporting on the facts as to why the screwed up.
The best way to tell if you benefitted from the tax cuts is by looking at last year return for “taxes due” and comparing it to the same field this year. No sense getting all stressed over witholding and payroll tax calculation.
The retards in the administration who decided to lower withholding amounts substantially may have cost Trump his re-election chances. It wasn’t that big of a tax cut in dollar terms for most people - a few grand a year at most. The bulk of families spend almost every paycheck they get. There is no money budgeted for payments to the IRS.
Thanks to cbs for digging up the worst case scenario they could find. I’m sure this never happened under obama.
Kills me how people look forward to getting their own money back from the fed gov after the fed gov has held on to it and made interest on it all year. I guess common sense ain’t so common any more.

Theres no cure for STUPID. A PhD with a doctor husband and wont take responsibility for determining how much to have withheld from their paychecks. This woman simply wanted to contribute to this intentionally misleading article.
This article is totally useless. No details as to what they did. They could have rolled funds into a ROTH for all we know and had to pay taxes on it.
Hit piece. Dear Isadora is a flaming liberal activist.
This is good. Instead of the IRS being perceived as a benevolent organization that sends out fat checks every April, many will begin to see how they take, take, take.
It might just mint some new conservatives.
We paid in 6K in 2017, deferred business investment to 2018.
I HATE using the government as my savings account. I’d much rather pay in then get a refund, that way I use my money all year, not the government.
Read post 11.
Everyone should have to pay their tax bill every month. The federal “withholding scam” simply fools people into thinking they are getting money from the government when they get a refund at the end of the year.
Remember, half the people in the country are below average intelligence, and a bunch more are not that much better. They are easy to fool.
In this woman’s case, I think she’s lying, but at any rate, her PhD as a neurobiologist shows she should be rich, so she SHOULD be paying a lot of taxes.
Apparenntly, PhD really does mean “Pothole Detector”...
