There wasn't enough turnout.
There weren't enough shots fired to threaten legal action (see: Covington) if they dared try to steal anything.
There wasn't enough "celebration of race" in Detroit and other hypocritical liberal Democratic areas.
Union money and Hollywood money came POURING IN from out-of-state.
. Establishment Repubs and Dems didn't want an "uppity" black (with a white wife) in the halls of the Senate.

That’s funny, I worked on his campaign, I’m very active here politically, current precinct delegate and serve on the county executive committee. I’ve never heard, not even a hint of what you wrote. No one thought he would get anywhere near 6 points to the most established democrat here in Michigan. He was at least 20 points down within six months of the election. Of all the candidates, he generated and garnered the most excitement by far. John ran a great campaign. He had the backing of every Republican, establishment included, that I knew, which is a lot. Not sure about UN, but John set himself up nicely to run against a much weaker candidate in Gary Peters.
I’ll see John Friday night at his party ahead of the convention. Maybe he’ll shed some light on this!
