Social Emotional Learning specialists? Here's an out of the box idea - go back to the 3 Rs and cut out the liberal fluff.

I would LOVE to see a campaign started to take Austin back from the left. I know, a tall order. But Texas deserves it.

Very true. Most state capitals are leftist toilets.

AISD handed them all clickers so they could comment in real time and weigh in on different topics related to the budget.

Decisions by survey instead of adults.

How much did the clickers cost?

Throw out the kids that don’t want to be there.

Once we graduated the 8th grade, several didn’t continue on. Is high school a requirement now?

Actually, if you just offered a ‘test-out’ option after the 10th grade, where you could take a test and get a high-school diploma...I think that 25-percent of kids would sign up and opt out/test, and head on off to community college or trade school.

My brother and I have often talked about the uselessness of the 12th grade and it was more of a baby-sitting stage than a learning stage. I would have opted out and signed up for local community college classes, if you’d offered the choice.

Imagine having 50-percent of the kids gone by the start of the 12th grade.

How about a 5% pay cut across the board.

Our son just showed up for home room (so they could get their money) his senior year. He was at junior college the rest of the time. Half of his junior year time was also at junior college. When he went off to college he didn’t do any of the freshman and a lot of the sophomore stuff.

I don’t know what those are, either.

Funny thing, I don’t see any mention otherwise of cutting administration. If they are like most school districts these days, administration could probably be reduced by 50% with no noticeable impact on the classroom. I don’t have the source handy but I heard a while back how much administration in Texas school districts had increased in relation to the increase in students, and it was not proportional.

Schools are always screaming for more money, but there is a lot of waste in most if not all school districts. Where I live in west Texas, every tiny little school district has school-district-owned Suburbans, usually seen with a single person, superintendent or other administrator, driving around. I can see this as legitimate if they need to transport students, but usually they aren’t driving students. Why can’t they drive their own vehicles? A few years ago I had a conversation with the wife of a superintendent from a small school district (so small they had a 6-man football team). They were going on vacation and using the airline points he had accrued from his “official” travel for the school district. That meant that the school district paid for him to fly on “business” often enough that he had sufficient miles to vacation with.

A lot of these “expenses” to the school systems are entrenched and no consideration of cutting them out is ever given.

Yet they will consider cutting teacher benefits, classroom supply budgets, and other things that do directly impact the classroom.

A nearby school district tried to sue their supt. because he was charging his dry cleaning to the school saying his suits were his uniform. He also used school construction supplies to remodel his house. The final straw was when the new math books for the next year mysteriously didn’t show up. The worst was the state didn’t go after him so he got off scot free and the little school district had to pay off his contract.

He should have faced criminal charges for the construction supplies.

For some reason, the vehicles are my biggest pet peeve. I remember back when I went to school (when dinosaurs roamed the earth as my sons say), in another state, our school superentendent would at times come by the high school while we were standing outside waiting to go in. I remember it distinctly because everybody always watched to see if that was going to be the day the door finally fell off his old truck! He drove an old pickup and when he got out, he had to lift the door to get it to shut.

I understand that schools probably can’t haul students around in private vehicles as was common in those days, but if there are no students in the vehicles, they need to be parked.

I work for a large corporation and drive all day, every day. I use my own vehicle and get mileage reimbursement. I don’t submit mileage for any personal errands- that could and probably would get me fired. Others in my job who drive over a certain number of miles a day on average do get rental vehicles, but the same thing applies; the vehicles are only for work use, not personal.

These small school systems also pay for school board members to go to “training” at least once a year, on the other side of the state. You’d think that Gotomeeting.com and Webex and similar services didn’t exist.

How does changing a schedule save money? MAYBE by not having buses hitting rush hour traffic, but I doubt that would save that much dough.

And a $65MM hole? That's really big - I bet there's tons of wasted fat that would be easy to cut!
