On January 30th, 2019 a woman thought she was stopping a dog fight. She ended up holding a 35-pound juvenile mountain lion instead. From idaho.gov:
Early on the morning of Jan. 30 a woman responded to what she thought was a fight between her dog and another dog outside of her Mackay home. As she pulled the two animals apart, she realized that in one hand she held a juvenile, male mountain lion about 35 pounds, and not another dog as she expected.
The woman restrained both her dog and the mountain lion while yelling for her husband, who was still inside the house, to grab a gun. Her husband responded and quickly dispatched the mountain lion as she held on to it.
On February 4, 2019 in Larimer County, Colorado, a man was able to fight off a mountain lion attack and kill the lion with his bare hands.
During the last 30 years, we have been actively protecting large predators, including bears, wolves, and mountain lions. Their populations and habitat are increasing.
As these large predators increase in population and habitat area, there have been increasing conflicts with humans.
The suggested response, from the Idaho Government, on encountering a mountain lion, is this. From idaho.gov:

....seems to be extra mountain lion activity this year...(stories) incidents
Every once in awhile the Mountain Lion forgets that they are not the top of the food chain around armed humans.
It's such easy logic.
That’s some kind o’ Woman. I’ll make it a point to be on my best behavior around her.
You'd better, or she'll get her husband to kill you.
My wife and I hike in parks and mountains in Pennsylvania (home) Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia regularly. Because we are prepared we do not fear encounters with predators be they on 4 feet or 2!
Federal wildlife thugs will railroad them into prison.
I’m calling BS on holding a Mountain Lion in one hand and a dog in the other considering that your standard issue POed puddy tat can turn around in its skin to nail you with tooth and claw.
Just saw a newswer with the Colorado guy. That story is fishy. Brave woman even trying to break up a dog fight. I have seen more than one person injured severely trying to break up a dog fight.
Midgets can be pretty mean.......
We had a massive 35lb(No fat) neutered house cat. He was an outdoor cat. He ruled a couple acres of our neighborhood. Gardens, BEFORE he arrived, were impossible. Rabbits had overrun the area. As he grew the rabbit problem ended. Our neighbors loved it and had no problem for the 10 years he roamed. He was so big he startled folks who had never seen him before.
A 35lb Mountain Lion is just a cub. Wonder where Momma was.
Yes, well, it was 35 lbs. A small-side female German Shepherd weighs twice that.
Why? They aren’t house cats, and it was only 35lbs.
I like it.
A rear naked choke with a leg lock used to immobilize the cat’s rear legs would do it. BUT...someone would have to be quite strong, well trained in hand-to-hand and VERY lucky. So...perhaps a modicum of BS.
We all gots to be on de lookout fur dem cougars, especially near Hillary book signings .
